The Sama Kutra
This comedy is about a couple married for so many years that they have hit a romantic wall. Feeling underappreciated and unloved, the big “D” word (divorce) is uttered. Is there any way Spark and Sizzle Fandango can rekindle their romance? The performers do a good job at making light of what could be a sad subject, performing in clown costumes and speaking in a made-up language that seems to be a mix of Italian, Spanish and Russian. The show starts as tensions grow and frustrations mount, moments many can relate to having experienced similar times in their own relationships. This is part of what makes the show so charming and goofy.
On the verge of divorce, Spark and Sizzle pray. Their prayers are answered as they are whisked away through some magical vortex to a secluded bedroom with only the Sama Kutra in sight. Deciding to give it a go, they open the book, which leads to mildly awkward sexual innuendos and discovery. However, they then ramp it up, moving from a tame striptease to a raunchy sex scene in two minutes flat. The audience duck and cover as various articles of clothing and food products are tossed around the theatre. The last five minutes of the show are an absolute mess, which the majority of the audience found hilarious. Although some were closing their eyes with dread, I’m not sure what they were expecting in coming to a show entitled “Sama Kutra”. Overall, this is a lighthearted show about love, discovery, and romance, with a very climatic ending that leaves the audience walking away with a smile (or shock) on their faces. This show is well worth seeing.
