Tragedy + Time Served = Comedy

Reviewed By: Cindy Murdoch

This one-man show by Mark Hughes takes us on a journey of his life.  Being “middle class fucked up” and feeling unconnected and unappreciated, leads him on a path of using alcohol and drugs to cope with life. Unfortunately, these stimulants lead him to mischief, crime, inappropriate relationships, and eventually, incarceration. The show comes with a warning “shocking language, subject matter, violent content, and sexual content” and all that is present in this show.  It’s a rough story, but a real one that touches on living in a disconnected, materialistic world as well as the reality that our current incarceration system often leaves people worse off rather than rehabilitated.

Now ten years sober and a standup comedian, Hughes does a good job of keeping things light with such heavy subject matter and stretches the audience's comfort zone, turning horrible situations into comedy.  A very well put together show that is both authentic and raw, this one is well worth checking out.
