At The Edge Of Canada: Indigenous Research

Today our guest is Indigenous Editor at Large for Canadian Art and Master’s student in Arts at Concordia University in Montréal, Lindsay Nixon. We discuss Lindsay’s recent article posted on Canadian Art on April 20 about the marginalization of Queer voices in the canon of Indigenous Art and art criticism, and we get her take on the debate that erupted on Indigenous Twitter about her choice to do some Indigenous feminist truth-telling about problematic male researchers. Lindsay’s article was ultimately censored and edited under the threat of libel, but the debate had reverberations throughout the academy and the discipline of Indigenous Studies. We chat about the heteronormativity of arts administration, gallery versus community based art collection, the force of Indigenous social media as a site of reclaiming, feminist truth-telling, academic aunties, and really revel in Lindsay’s grace, knowledge, and awareness as a top Indigenous intellectual.
