Criminals in Love

Venue 2 – MTC Up the Alley

Another Fringe, another George F. Walker play by local company Venus.calm. This year we meet a family in which the father is in jail, but needs the son to do him a favour. Unfortunately, the favour involves criminal activity.

I am a big fan of Walker’s work. The play is full of dark comedy, several strange plot twists and every so often a deep thought to make the audience think. Like a lot of his other plays, Walker wonders whether we owe our family unconditional support or whether we should cut our losses when the person in question is hopeless.

Wisely, the actors take their characters seriously even though the situation gets stranger as the play progresses. This makes the few outbursts (especially those by Gail and Wineva) all the more enjoyable.
