Life on the Fringe Blog – July 24

First time Fringer

Tina Teeninga has never performed at a Fringe Festival until now. This year, she is performing The Saddest Girl in the World at the Winnipeg and Saskatoon Fringes. Tina is a Vancouver playwright who wanted to do the Fringe because it offered her the chance to perform her own material. She told me that the most surprising thing about the Fringe so far is how hard it is to build an audience. With 139 indoor shows, Fringe performers are competing for the hearts and wallets of Winnipeg audiences. As a result, some quality shows are getting overlooked.  In addition to Tina’s show, I’ve seen small crowds for Learning The Game and RUNNING OUT, both of which were quality shows.

AA all the Way

Maureen Taggert (co-director of The Dining Room) told me that the American Airlines inflight magazine for July had a blurb about the Winnipeg Fringe sandwiched between events in Vermont and Switzerland. Kudos to whoever at MTC was able to land that listing.
