The Official Napolean Dynamite Dance Class Venue 9 – The
Rachel Browne Theatre (WCD Studio)
Darren
Boquist plays the roll of several different characters in this one-man
show. Bob, the dance class
instructor who taught Napolean everything he knows about dancing, until in a
moment of great betrayal, Napolean stole his signature dance move, won the
big dance competition and goes on to become famous while leaving Bob behind
in the shadows. He also plays the
dance class participants, others in the dance competition and Bob’s
hair who really has a mind of its own.
He does not however play Napolean Dynamite at any time, that part is
played solely through sound bite clips from the movie. While the
dance numbers are funny, they are only a few of them. It is wonderful to watch Boquist
rapidly jump from one character to another without costume change or losing
the audience. Unfortunately, the
whole show comes off as something the character of Napolean would have put on
himself, which, in the end, I think may have been the intended point. It is utterly unpredictable, bizarre,
and possibly entertaining… If you loved the movie, I think you will
love this show. However, if you
only mildly liked the film, or have not seen, you will be left with a sense
of uncertainty, maybe even confusion, at the end of the play. - Cindy Murdoch UMFM |
