In Other News

Venue 2 – MTC Up the Alley

What do you get when you take a group of talented teenagers, give them a little help with a script, a few props and costumes, then turn them loose on stage and let their imaginations run wild?  I think you would get something like In Other News, a rollicking spoof of the news biz.  One could derive enjoyment from this play simply from the youthful enthusiasm and joy of performing exhibited by the cast.  But this is much more than a bunch of kids horsing around.  The cast, to a person are sharp and poised and do a great job of staying in character throughout.  The humour is chaotic and irreverent, occasionally sophomoric, but also often surprisingly subtle and sophisticated.  The script, written by the cast in collaboration with Winnipeg playwright/actor Debbie Patterson, is fast paced, intelligent and funny.  Overall this show is very entertaining and fun to watch.  Based on the performances in this play, I would be very surprised if at least some of the actors don't go on to have successful careers in theatre.
