The
Sputniks are a family who are forced to leave Russia when they become targeted by
authorities for what the father is teaching his students. The family then moves
to other countries, including Poland, Sweden and Canada, all the time looking for a place
where they will be accepted.
I really
enjoyed this story. It manages to nicely balance both drama and comedy. Like
any family, they just want to find a safe place to live, but they exchange
the police surveillance of Russia for the hard life in refugee
camps and anti-Jewish discrimination they find in other countries. Every so
often, Elison Zasko adds a little comedy to the mix, including some very
funny jokes about line-ups and pickles.
