The Tricky Part Venue 11 –
The
Tricky Part is
Martin Moran’s autobiographical play about a middle aged adult coming to
some understanding regarding the sexual abuse inflicted upon him by a
Catholic church councillor in 1975 when he was only 12 years old. The play
switches back and forth between modern times in which the adult boy is
talking to his perpetrator and the past in which the innocent boy is learning
religion and suffers the sexual abuse. Give credit to actor Peter Hayes and director Jaqueline Dommisse for clearly
distinguishing the 2 time periods. As a young boy, Hayes is moving around the
stage using lots of hand gestures to convey the playfulness of a 12 year old
boy. As an adult, Hayes gives a restrained performance sitting in a chair as
he is trying to come to some understanding about what happened 30 years ago. I also liked that the play resisted the Dr. Phil
urge to impose a completely happy ending where all of the issues are worked
out. Given the severity of the incident, our main character still has
problems even after confronting his perpetrator and this seems like a more
realistic way to end this piece. Overall, this is an excellent play that is
worth seeing. - Justin Olynyk
