The Wizard of One Venue 3 – The
Playhouse Studio
The
Wizard of One is an
updated version of the classic American story The Wizard of Oz.
Frank’s son marries a mean person who gets Frank committed to an old
folks home. While in the home, he and his fellow seniors must outwit the head
nurse and find The Man. This
piece was incredibly charming and delightful. Writer/performer Neil James
does a wonderful job infusing his characters with warmth and personality. I
especially loved his take on the cowardly lion. It was a joy to watch him
quickly and effortlessly switch between the various characters. I also liked
that James portrayed the senior citizens as real people that can contribute
to the quest and not as foolish old people. As proof of Neil James’
storytelling ability, the children at the opening day performance were quiet
and completely entranced in this beautiful story. - Justin Olynyk
