Yorick Venue 5 – Son of
Warehouse
Written by Mark Leiren-Young,
Yorick! is a
comedy in which the title character is determined to set the record straight
on Hamlet and Shakespeare. The strength of this production is not so much the
material, which is only mildly amusing , but the
acting. The actor playing Yorick stays in
character throughout. He is very nimble on his feet, punctuating his material
with spontaneously funny little dances. His face lights up
when his jokes make people laugh and he becomes wistful when they
don't. In short, he is very convincing as a professional court
jester. In addition to the comedy, Yorick
also performs two excerpts from Shakespeare, which were cleverly
staged and my favourite parts of this play. He performs the scene from A
Midsummer Night's Dream where the parts from Pyramus
and Thisbe are being meted out using a plastic
skull as a puppet. Later, he performs an excerpt from the Taming of
the Shrew where he plays the parts of both Petruchio
and Kate in a dress. Overall, this is an entertaining show which should
please Shakespearean buffs. - Terry Moor UMFM |
